The Vegas Golden Knights, who started the season with a high-flying offense, are currently in the midst of a scoring slump, culminating in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, November 20. This defeat marked their first shutout of the season, highlighting the struggles they’ve encountered since star forward Mark Stone was injured on November 6.

In the early part of the season, the Golden Knights were a force to be reckoned with, outscoring opponents 61-43 and leading the league with a power-play conversion rate near 30%. Their first line, consisting of Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, and Ivan Barbashev, was among the best in the league, with Stone and Eichel both ranking in the top five in points. Stone even earned the NHL’s first star of the week honors before his injury in a game against Edmonton.

However, since Stone’s injury, which forced the team to make adjustments to its lineup, the Golden Knights’ offensive production has sharply declined. Over their last five games, they have posted a 2-3-1 record and have struggled to generate offense, scoring just 11 goals in that stretch. In their most recent loss to the Maple Leafs, they were unable to find the back of the net despite firing 34 shots on goal.

Coach Bruce Cassidy acknowledged that the team’s offensive output was unlikely to continue at the pace it was earlier in the season but also recognized that the recent drop-off has been more abrupt than expected. “We knew it would balance out,” Cassidy said. “We were shooting at a high percentage earlier, and we knew that wasn’t sustainable.”

Vegas has also been unable to replicate the chemistry of their top line in Stone’s absence. Forward Nicolas Roy and Pavel Dorofeyev have been inserted into the first-line role, but the duo has struggled to match the production and synergy that Stone provided. In the six games since the injury, the line has combined for just three points, with the Golden Knights unable to find a consistent offensive rhythm.

The team’s frustration was evident after the loss, with Eichel noting the team’s need to improve its goal-scoring efforts. “We put a lot of pressure on them, but we didn’t get results,” said Eichel. “We need to find ways to score goals.”

Cassidy expressed hope that the players filling in for Stone would respond better in their next game. “Some of the guys weren’t at their best against Toronto, but they have to step up quickly,” Cassidy said. “That’s what good teams do—they correct mistakes fast.”

The Golden Knights will have a quick chance to rebound, with a game against the Ottawa Senators less than 24 hours after the loss to Toronto. Cassidy believes the fast turnaround will work in their favor, giving them little time to dwell on the loss. “Sometimes it’s good to get back out there quickly,” he said. “We’re ready to get back at it.”

With the season still young, the Golden Knights will need to find their scoring touch again if they hope to remain a contender. The clock is ticking, and they’ll look to bounce back with a strong performance against Ottawa.
