Anthony “Tank” Jones, the highly touted five-star edge rusher and son of Alabama football legend Julio Jones, has officially signed with the Oregon Ducks, solidifying a commitment he made last summer.
Jones, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive standout from St. Paul’s Episcopal High School in Mobile, Alabama, put pen to paper during the early signing period on December 3, 2025. Ranked as high as No. 27 overall in the ESPN 300 and among the top edge rushers nationally, he had been a prime target for Southeastern Conference powerhouses, particularly the Crimson Tide, where his father’s storied legacy as one of the program’s all-time great wide receivers made Alabama the presumed frontrunner for years.
Yet, Jones shocked many when he verbally committed to Oregon on July 31, 2025, during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. He cited the Ducks’ modern approach to player development, innovative schemes under head coach Dan Lanning, and emphasis on cutting-edge training and NIL opportunities as key factors in his decision.
In post commitment interviews, Jones emphasized choosing “innovation over tradition,” highlighting Oregon’s reputation for blending high-tech facilities, creative defensive packages, and a forward-thinking culture that prioritizes adaptability in the evolving Big Ten era over longstanding SEC-style pageantry.
“Tradition is great, but I want to be part of something that’s building the future,” Jones reportedly told recruiting analysts after his pledge. “Oregon is innovating schemes, recovery, branding, everything. That’s where I see myself thriving.”
Anthony Jones, often nicknamed “Tank” for his powerful, explosive frame and relentless motor, projects as a versatile edge defender capable of lining up as an outside linebacker or hand-in-the-dirt pass rusher. Scouts compare his athleticism and bend to players like Illinois’ Gabe Jacas, with Day 1 potential in Oregon’s aggressive defensive front.
Despite late pushes from schools like Texas A&M, Auburn, and Miami including official visits and game-day experiences Jones remained steadfast with the Ducks, even as flip rumors surfaced in September 2025.
Oregon’s 2026 class, already stacked with fellow five-stars like safety Jett Washington, tight end Kendre Harrison, and offensive tackle Immanuel Iheanacho, received a massive boost from Jones’ signature. The Ducks’ recruiting efforts under Lanning continue to emphasize national reach over regional ties, landing elite talent from the South and positioning Oregon as a consistent top-10 program in rankings.
It’s a declaration of independence from the shadow of his father’s Alabama dynasty. While Julio’s No. 8 jersey hangs in Tuscaloosa lore, Anthony is forging his legacy in Eugene’s green and yellow, betting on a system that values speed, versatility, and modern strategy.
