Texas A&M HC Mike Elko offers clarity about Shemar Stewart returning

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko firmly dismissed speculation that former star defensive end Shemar Stewart might return to Aggies football after being drafted 17th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite remaining unsigned and running with his collegiate teammates at Texas A&M, Elko stated unequivocally, “There’s no intention of Shemar to play for the Aggies this year”. Representing Stewart’s alma mater, his words signal a clear message: this summer’s workouts reflect training, not a change in eligibility plans.

Stewart’s contract dispute resulted in Texas A&M speculation

Stewart remains in a contract standoff with the Bengals over a clause enabling Cincinnati to void guaranteed money in case of misconduct. Although NFL rookies can’t legally return to the NCAA, conjecture centered on an unlikely court challenge to regain eligibility. Elko confirmed that while Stewart appreciates being “very comfortable” training in Aggieland, his full focus is on preparing for an NFL career, not re-enrolling.

What this means for Texas A&M and the Bengals

From Texas A&M’s perspective, this resolution removes a potential logistical and narrative distraction. Elko emphasized that his 2024 team stumbled late in the season, an 1-4 finish after starting 7-1 underscored the need for stability and focus for upcoming seasons.
