Sidney Crosby: The Rangers’ Ultimate ‘What If’ Still Lingers

As speculation continues to swirl around Sidney Crosby’s future with the Pittsburgh Penguins, The Maven, hockey analyst Stan Fischler, has reignited the discussion that Crosby could someday become a New York Ranger. This tantalizing possibility has fans and pundits on edge once again, especially as Crosby remains unsigned to a contract extension with the Penguins. While the Penguins have reportedly put forth several offers to secure their beloved captain, Crosby has yet to put pen to paper, and that hesitation could spell trouble for Pittsburgh.

The concern in Pittsburgh isn’t unfounded. Crosby, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, has always been synonymous with excellence, but he’s entering the latter stages of his career. A player of his caliber is unlikely to be satisfied playing for a team that isn’t competing at the highest level. As the Penguins seem to be heading towards a rebuild, Crosby’s reluctance to commit long-term could signal that he’s unwilling to spend his final years with a franchise that might not be positioned for another deep playoff run.

NHL rumors: Sidney Crosby 'not rushing' contract with Penguins
Crosby’s concerns likely extend beyond just the roster. Kyle Dubas, the Penguins’ new general manager, has only been with the team for a year, and his track record leaves much to be desired. Fischler doesn’t mince words when discussing Dubas, calling him an “over-his-head loser GM.” According to Fischler, Dubas has done more harm than good since his arrival, much like his tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, which was marred by playoff failures despite a talented roster. For a player like Crosby, who thrives on winning, Dubas’ management style could be a significant red flag.

Moreover, Crosby’s longtime teammates, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, are nearing the twilight of their careers. As they age, their ability to perform at an elite level will inevitably decline. Even the addition of Erik Karlsson, a once-great defenseman, may not be enough to sway Crosby into staying. In Fischler’s view, Karlsson’s acquisition is nothing more than a poor use of resources, comparing it to Dubas’ ill-advised signing of John Tavares in Toronto.

If Crosby is indeed looking for greener pastures, the New York Rangers could offer a compelling opportunity. Under the leadership of general manager Chris Drury, the Rangers have built a competitive team with a strong core of young talent, as well as the recent Presidents’ Trophy win. Bringing Crosby into the fold could provide the veteran leadership and star power needed to make a serious run at the Stanley Cup. After all, if the Rangers were able to acquire legendary players like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, why not Crosby?

For Rangers fans, the possibility of Crosby wearing a Blueshirt would be a dream come true. As Fischler points out, it would take mere seconds for the Madison Square Garden faithful to embrace him as their new hero. While this scenario remains speculative, the longer Crosby delays signing an extension in Pittsburgh, the more plausible it becomes that he could eventually make the move to New York. For now, the NHL world watches and waits, wondering if Crosby’s ‘maybe’ will ever turn into reality.
