New York Knicks’ Josh Hart Opens Up About Team’s Recent Skid

Injuries are something that every NBA team has to deal with throughout the season. Some teams are luckier than others, as they avoid the big injuries to key players. But, there are teams on the other end of the spectrum who don’t get so lucky. The New York Knicks would fall into the latter.
New York was rolling to start 2024, winning 15 out of their first 17 games. The trade they made with the Toronto Raptors to acquire OG Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn was paying major dividends as the team was transforming into one of the best in the NBA before our eyes.
Unfortunately, the injuries began piling up after that. The Knicks were able to overcome the loss of starting center Mitchell Robinson because Isaiah Hartenstein stepped into the lineup and was excellent. But, he has been dealing with an Achilles injury for more than a month which has derailed his production.
Joining Mitchell on the sidelines for an extended absence was the team’s starting forward duo of Anunoby and Julius Randle. The last time either of them has been on the court was January 27th against the Miami Heat.
Anunoby has been dealing with an elbow issue and underwent surgery to repair it. Randle separated his shoulder in that game and has been working hard to get back on the court. But, surgery remains a possibility for him.
Without their entire frontcourt depth, and injuries to Jalen Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo, Bojan Bogdanovic and Jericho Sims mixed in, New York has been undermanned for weeks. One of the players who has been pushed into a much larger role as a result is Josh Hart.
Hart, who began the season coming off the bench for New York as a do-it-all wing, is now the starting small forward. He is also the backup shooting guard and backup power forward on some nights depending on what Tom Thibodeau needs.
But, things are beginning to take a toll on him and his teammates. Following Thursday’s loss to the Golden State Warriors, Hart opened up about the team’s recent skid, as New York has lost seven out of their last nine games.
“I’m not sure what you all expect or what you all think. We are playing as best as we can with the bodies that we have. We have guys like [OG Anunoby], [Julius Randle], [Mitchell Robinson], who’ve been out for a long time. … We’re playing our asses off. It’s not like we’re just sitting there and crying about injuries and laying down,” a frustrated and tired Hart said.
No one will ever question the heart and grit of this Knicks team. No matter the odds stacked against them, they are going to come out and compete every night even when they are at a distinct disadvantage talent-wise.
But, the injuries have certainly begun taking a toll. It has resulted in some heavy workloads that players are not used to, and their performance on the court is beginning to show that. Hart is one of the guys who has been called upon and is doing his best to keep the team in games.
Against the Warriors on Thursday night, Hart played 47:10 in a non-overtime game. It is the ninth time he has logged 40+ minutes this season. Eight of those games have come since Anunoby and Randle went down, as he is averaging roughly 40.1 minutes per game.
Sooner or later, something will have to give. Players aren’t going to make it until the NBA Playoffs at this rate, as Thibodeau needs to find a way to not only keep his guys healthy but keep the team afloat with victories until reinforcements arrive.

The Hawks will place veteran guard Patty Mills on waivers, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic. Mills, 35, was traded three times last July before winding up in Atlanta. He has appeared in just 19 games this season and hasn’t played since February 7. In his 15th NBA season, Mills is averaging 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 10.6 minutes per night, but he’s shooting 38.2% from three-point range, so he could have value for a contending team seeking an experienced shooter. Assuming Mills is waived before Friday, he will be eligible to appear in the playoffs if he signs with another club by the end of the season. He has a $6.8M expiring contract, so the Hawks won’t owe him any money beyond this season. The Hawks will use the open roster spot to convert two-way guard Trent Forrest to a standard NBA contract, Charania tweets. The move will make Forrest eligible to play again as he had already reached his 50-game limit as a two-way player, even though he has only appeared in 20 games, averaging 2.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 10.5 minutes per night off Atlanta’s bench. Forrest, 25, is in his second season with Atlanta after signing a two-way deal with the team in the summer of 2022. Prior to that, he played two years in Utah. The Hawks now have a full 15-man roster and a two-way opening that can be filled through March 4.

Outspoken veteran cornerback Darius Slay isn’t shy about sharing his opinion. Still, his most recent comments on Philadelphia Eagles faithful won’t make him any new fans in the “City of Brotherly Love.” Appearing on “The Corner Suite” podcast co-hosted by Houston Texans CB and former Eagle Steven Nelson, Slay went hard at Philly fans for how they treat the players that represent them. “If they like you, they like you. If they don’t, it’s over with,” Slay said. “If you ain’t a baller — even if you is — The only person I seen them love is Lane [Johnson] and [Jason] Kelce.” Slay admitted that over an 11-year career, Eagles fans are the only ones to have gotten under his skin, saying they “talk crazy.” “If we’re losing at halftime and we go in, ‘Boo,’ the whole stadium,” Slay said. “We get booed a lot.” Nelson, who spent the 2021 season with the Eagles, backed up Slay’s account of Philly fan behavior. He said it often became an us against them type of situation at Lincoln Financial Field, adding that his short stay with the team wasn’t good for his “mental health.” “Even if you make a good play — it got to the point where I was playing against the fans,” Nelson said. “I’d have a third down stop, and I’m talking s— to the fans.” This isn’t the first time Slay has criticized Eagles fans. Ahead of the postseason, he said he’d rather play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road instead of facing boos from the home fans in Philly. He ultimately backpedaled, claiming it was a lighthearted joke. Whether his comments are fair or not, this time around, it’s clear he wasn’t joking. However, it shouldn’t lead to any negative feelings from Philly fans because, as we all know, they’re notoriously a very forgiving bunch.

Kevin Byard joined the Eagles as a trade acquisition in 2023, but his time with the franchise has proven to be quite short. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that veteran safety is being released. Byard enjoyed a productive seven-plus seasons with the Titans, but his future in the organization faced questions entering the 2023 campaign. He wound up beginning the year in Tennessee but was dealt to the Eagles shortly before the trade deadline. The move allowed the Titans to continue moving on from veteran contracts while providing Philadelphia with an experienced option in the secondary. One year remained on Byard’s pact, but he will now hit the open market instead. The 30-year-old was due $14.1M in 2024, but very little was guaranteed. Today’s move will generate over $13M in cap savings for the Eagles and a dead cap charge of only $1.39M. As the Eagles look to rebuild a defense that struggled down the stretch, particularly last season, that added financial flexibility will be welcomed before free agency. Byard remained a full-time starter in the regular season with the Eagles, as was the case during the team’s wild-card loss. He recorded one interception, three pass deflections and 80 total tackles in that span, production which could allow him to land a short-term deal as a veteran contributor. The two-time All-Pro has nevertheless seen his ball production decline in recent years, which will hurt his market value as he joins several veteran safeties in search of a new home. Eddie Jackson, Tracy Walker and Marcus Maye have each been released by their teams in cost-shedding moves. The same is true of Byard, meaning several experienced options will be available in free agency (compared to relatively few young producers at the safety spot, particularly if Antoine Winfield Jr. is franchise-tagged by the Buccaneers). After including Terrell Edmunds in the package to acquire Byard, the Eagles will be a team to watch concerning an addition at the position. Philadelphia only has Sydney Brown and Reed Blankenship under contract for 2024. Justin Evans, a pending free agent, could join Byard in finding a new team soon. Friday’s move will leave the Eagles with roughly $42M in cap space, allowing them the flexibility to pursue an upgrade on the backend. It will be interesting for Byard to see how strong of a market develops as he likely prepares to join a third team in his career.

With a six-game winning streak heading into Thursday’s home game against the New York Islanders, the surging Detroit Red Wings have conjured memories of Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom hoisting Stanley Cups On social media, Red Wings fans are proclaiming “Hockeytown is back” as coach Derek Lalonde’s team has rocketed to the sixth overall in the Eastern Conference playoff race and into fourth in the Atlantic Division. On Wednesday, WXYZ-TV reporter Brad Galli shared a quote from Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon that encapsulated the mood of the team in its pursuit of prime playoff positioning. “It’s super important that we don’t get too far ahead of ourselves,” Lyon said. “We still got a lot of games left. We have to continue to do the right things.” The 31-year-old Lyon signed a two-year, $1.8 million deal with Detroit this offseason after a year with the Florida Panthers and has quietly become one of the league’s most shrewd free-agent pickups. Lyon is tied for ninth in the NHL in save percentage and continues to ascend the ranks of his peers with a 2.69 goals-against average (16th in league). Lyon has allowed only eight goals over the course of his current four-game winning streak. Once the team’s third-stringer, he is the favorite to be in the nets come playoff time, should the Red Wings hang on and secure a spot. He’s also becoming a fan favorite with his laid-back, unassuming personality. “The fans here have been incredible since day one,” Lyon said, per Galli. “When the fans show up like that every game win, lose or draw it’s special, and it’s not a given.”

The NFL combine can be a make-or-break week for NFL Draft prospects as they get to show coaches and executives their size, strength and athleticism. After a couple of days full of interviews and meeting with teams, players actually started physically working out on Thursday to show what they can do. Defensive linemen and outside linebackers got things started, so let’s get some takeaways on the players that stood out. 1. Braden Fiske is rapidly rising up draft boards. Florida State defensive tackle Braden Fiske was already starting to climb draft boards and mock drafts entering the combine, and he didn’t do anything to slow that progress down on Thursday. Not only did Fiske show athleticism with the highest vertical leap (33.5 inches) and longest broad jump (nine feet, nine inches) among defensive tackles, he also turned in a fantastic 40-yard dash time of 4.78 seconds. He knew it was a great time, too. Fiske is quickly putting himself in a position to be a Day 2 pick. 2. Chop Robinson can fly. Every year there seems to be at least one Penn State player who wows scouts and NFL personnel at the combine. This year it’s edge-rusher Chop Robinson who turned in a blazing 40-yard dash time of 4.49 seconds. It was a day of mixed results for Robinson and highlighted both his strengths and weaknesses. On one hand, he is as fast as any edge-rusher in the draft. On the other hand, his 32.5-inch arm length and 76-inch wingspan were among the smallest of the edge-rushers. He is not going to overpower people or bring imposing size, but he will out-run everybody. 3. T’Vondre Sweat is a mountain of a player. Sweat raised some eyebrows at the Senior Bowl when he elected not to weigh in. He did so at the combine on Thursday and checked in at 366 pounds, making him one of the heaviest players to ever appear at the combine. That size does not limit his mobility, however, and he showed some smooth footwork and turned in a strong 40-time. 4. Payton Wilson lights up the 40-yard. Wilson was a wildly productive five-year player at North Carolina State and is coming off a dominant 2023 season that saw him record 138 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, three interceptions and a defensive touchdown. That production alone will put him on the map for NFL executives. Then he went out and turned in a 4.4 40-yard dash time that was tops on the day. 5. Dallas Turner puts on a show. Turner is the type of player the combine is made for. Not only was he a productive player at an NCAA powerhouse (Alabama), but he also crushed every single workout, including a 40.5-inch vertical leap and a 4.47 40-yard dash. Just for comparisons sake, that 40-yard time would have seen him outrun past Crimson Tide alum (and NFL superstars) quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Derrick Henry. 6. Brock Bowers unsure if he will run at combine. The Georgia tight end is not only the top player in the 2024 class at his position, but he is expected to be one of the top players taken in the draft. Even though Friday is the day tight ends actually get on the field to start doing workouts, they spoke on Thursday. Along with saying he would like to bulk up more this offseason, he is unsure if he will run or work out on Friday. He said if he does not, then he definitely will at Georgia’s pro day.

The Chicago Bears, like all of the other NFL teams, are making moves in order to gear up for the start of the 2024 season and the franchise made a couple of new coaching hires on Friday as they continue marching forward. Per team release, the Bears hired Bryan Bing and former NFL quarterback, Ryan Griffin. The former will work as an assistant with the defensive line, while the latter will work with quarterbacks and receivers. Both are labeled as assistant coaches. Griffin was in the NFL from 2013-2022, but unfortunately, he appeared in just one game and attempted for total passes over the course off his career. Still he got to learn under Tom Brady and Drew Brees, two of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. Griffin’s biggest claim to fame is when he helped a very inebriated Brady find safety after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Super Bowl Boat Parade in 2021. As for Bing, he spent last season as a defensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts. He was part of the Tony Dungy Diversity Coaching Fellowship Program. Before that, he was a defensive line coach in the college ranks.
