Ohio State Coach Ryan Day Reflects on Michigan Loss and Post-Game Altercation

What Happened?
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has addressed the post-game altercation following the Buckeyes’ 13-10 loss to Michigan on Saturday at Ohio Stadium. The incident unfolded after Michigan players attempted to plant an “M” flag on the iconic “Block O” at midfield. Several Ohio State players left the traditional post-game singing of Carmen Ohio to confront Michigan at midfield. According to the Ohio State Police, officers from both teams resorted to using pepper spray to de-escalate the situation.

“I don’t know all the details of it, but I know these guys were looking to put a flag on our field, and our guys were not going to let that happen,” Day said. “We’re embarrassed about the loss, but our team is full of prideful guys who weren’t going to stand by and let that happen.”

This heated exchange overshadowed a dramatic Michigan upset, adding another chapter to the storied rivalry. This is not the first time Michigan has planted its flag at Ohio Stadium; a similar act followed their 45-23 victory in 2022. However, this latest loss—Ohio State’s most painful in recent years—has left fans and players grappling with disappointment.

A Psychological Challenge for Ohio State
The defeat marked Ohio State’s fourth consecutive loss to Michigan, leaving the Buckeyes at 10-2 (7-2 in the Big Ten). While their playoff aspirations remain intact, the psychological toll of the loss looms large.

Ryan Day, now 1-4 against Michigan, admitted the frustration of falling short in a pivotal game. “I don’t really have the answer right now,” he said. “We’re fresh off The Game, and it’s hard to process this. We’re very disappointed. Never thought this would happen here.”

Ohio State entered the game as heavy favourites, with Michigan struggling at 7-5. Despite standout performances from the Buckeyes’ Caleb Downs and Jack Sawyer, Ohio State failed to capitalise on key moments. Missed opportunities, including two field goals and two interceptions by quarterback Will Howard, proved costly.

“When you’re throwing 33 times out of 59 plays, you can’t just abandon the run,” Day noted. “But the turnovers, missed field goals, and lack of rushing yards cost us. Every yard and every point matters.”

Michigan’s Dominance and Post-Game Comments
Michigan’s Kalel Mullings carried the Wolverines with 32 rushes for 116 yards, including a game-defining 27-yard run on third-and-six. Following the victory, Mullings delivered a pointed critique of Ohio State’s post-game actions.

“At the end of the day, they have to learn how to lose,” Mullings told Fox’s Jenny Taft. “We had 60 minutes to fight. Now they want to talk and fight? That’s bad for the game. Classless, in my opinion.”

Looking Ahead
Ohio State’s season isn’t over, as the Buckeyes remain in contention for the 12-team College Football Playoff. While the Big Ten championship is out of reach, the team has a chance to regroup and compete for a national title.

Reflecting on the importance of the rivalry, Day emphasised, “Everybody wants to win this game in the worst way, and nobody wants it more than we do. It’s our No. 1 goal every year. When you don’t achieve that, it’s disappointing and frustrating.”

Players, including linebacker Cody Simon and quarterback Will Howard, expressed similar sentiments. Fighting back tears, Simon said, “This hurts. We have to come together as a team.”

Howard added, “We’re a two-loss team. We’re going to make the playoffs and make a run, but this one hurts.”

Final Thoughts
As Ohio State prepares for the playoff, the team must shift its focus away from the bitter rivalry loss and onto their championship aspirations. The coming weeks will test the Buckeyes’ resilience and ability to rebound in the face of adversity.
