NHL REPORT: Surprise MVP Candidate Emerges as a Game-Changer for the Carolina Hurricanes This Season

The Carolina Hurricanes have been one of the NHL’s most formidable teams this season, but what’s truly catching everyone’s attention is the unexpected MVP candidate rising within their ranks: forward Martin Necas.

At the start of the 2024-25 season, few would have predicted Necas to be leading the league in scoring. Many expected star center Sebastian Aho to maintain his role as the team’s top scorer, but Necas has turned heads with his breakout performance. After a 2023-24 campaign where he registered 24 goals and 53 points, Necas has already shattered expectations in the early stages of this season. Through the first 21 games, he has posted an impressive 12 goals, 23 assists, and 35 points, tying him with Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon for the NHL lead in points.

This unexpected surge in production has thrust Necas into the MVP conversation, a testament to his tremendous growth and the opportunity he’s been given with the Hurricanes. Despite losing key players in the offseason, including winger Jake Guentzel to free agency, Carolina has remained a competitive force in the league. Necas’ explosive play has become a key factor in their success, and with his contract extension signed in the offseason, he is fully seizing his chance to lead the way.

For Necas, his remarkable start is not a surprise to him. The 25-year-old forward has always believed he could be an elite player. In an interview with Matt Larkin of The Daily Faceoff, Necas reflected on his hot start, attributing much of his success to the confidence he’s gained and the opportunities he’s been afforded this season.

“I always believed in myself that I could be this kind of player,” Necas said. “Being on the first power play and being out there in key moments has been huge for me. My linemates have been great, and the power play has been clicking, which helps a lot too.”

His elevated ice time and chemistry with teammate Andrei Svechnikov have further bolstered Necas’ performance. Playing alongside a natural sniper like Svechnikov has allowed Necas to maximize his playmaking abilities, leading to a career-high start to the season. The added responsibility on special teams, including time on the first power play unit, has also played a key role in his offensive production.

Given his current trajectory, it’s not out of the question to think that Necas could finish the season as a legitimate MVP contender. His production has been consistent, and he’s playing the best hockey of his career. If he can sustain his pace, the Hurricanes’ unexpected MVP candidate may just become the focal point of their championship aspirations this year.
