News Robert: Bucks Set to Land Star Defender in a Blockbuster Trade
The Milwaukee Bucks have been on a strong run recently, winning six of their last seven games and climbing back into contention for a top spot in the Eastern Conference. While their offense has found a rhythm, the team’s defense remains an area of concern as they continue to make strides toward a championship contender. To address this, the Bucks are being linked to Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams III, a player with a significant defensive presence.
According to Bovada, the Bucks are one of the top contenders to acquire Williams before the 2025 NBA trade deadline, with +500 odds to land the star defender. These odds tie the Bucks with the New Orleans Pelicans and the Sacramento Kings, while the New York Knicks currently hold the best odds at +225. With their defense ranking just 17th in the league in defensive rating and struggling in various categories—including opponent points per game (16th), fast break points (25th), and rebounds (19th)—the Bucks are clearly in need of an upgrade.
Williams could provide exactly what the Bucks are missing on the defensive end. A dynamic shot-blocker and elite rebounder, Williams made a name for himself during his time with the Boston Celtics, especially during the 2021-2022 season. That year, he averaged 10.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and finished seventh in Defensive Player of the Year voting. He was also named to the All-Defensive Team. Standing 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-6 wingspan, Williams’ ability to impact the game with his shot-blocking and rebounding has made him a highly sought-after asset.
However, Williams’ injury history is a concern. Throughout his seven-year career, he has been plagued by injuries and has played in only 227 games, with his highest game total being 61 in a single season. Despite these injury issues, Williams’ defensive impact has been undeniable when he is on the floor, and if the Bucks can manage his health, he could be a game-changer for their defense.
The potential acquisition of Williams would not only solidify the Bucks’ defense but also provide them with a versatile center who can contribute on both ends of the floor. His shot-blocking ability, combined with his rebounding prowess, could allow the Bucks to become a more formidable defensive unit, especially in the postseason, where defense often plays a pivotal role in championship runs.
