The Detroit Pistons have officially bought out Mike Muscala earlier this evening.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. who broke the news that the two sides were working on a buyout, said that a few playoff contending teams are interest in signing Muscala.
Muscala played well for Detroit since coming over from Washington in mid-January. Muscala averaged 3.2 points and 2.5 rebounds while compiling a shooting line of .341/.382/.500 in 13 minutes over 13 appearances. He reached double-figures once for the Pistons and four times for the Wizards this season while also prodicing a +3.5 plus/minus rating. However, the 33-year-old big man has
not played in the Pistons’ last four games.
Muscala is a quality backup who can play both the four and five. The 6-11 veteran is pretty much strictly a floor spacer whether off a pick-and-pop or as a stand still shooter. He is a career 37.6% shooter from beyond the arc, making 40.1% of his corner threes.
Muscala is also a quality defensive rebounder who is a physical interior defender. Muscala can also defend bigs on the perimeter.
According to Woj, Muscala has some playoff contenders interested in signing him once he hits the waiver wire. But to be eligible to participate in the playoffs, Muscala must secure the buyout by Friday night. Per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Muscala is due $905,000 for the remainder of the season.
Muscala likely gave up some of that money to secure his free agency. Muscala will clear waivers on Friday.
Who could be interested in Muscala?
The Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, New Orleans Pelicans, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, and the New York Knicks immediately come to mind.
The Warriors have one open roster spot. The Dubs are always looking for size and depth up front. However, they appear to be set with Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga starting up front. Dario Saric, Andrew Wiggins, and Kevon Looney are the top bigs off the bench. However, Muscala would be an upgrade over Trayce Jackson-Davis for sixth on the depth chart.
The Celtics have one open spot and could use Muscala, who spent 20 games with the C’s a season ago, as an emergency type player.
The Pelicans will have one open spot after Jalen Crutcher‘s 10-day contract expires in a few days. While the Pels could benefit from the signing of Muscala, they could use another guard more.
The Suns have an open spot. They recently signed Thaddeus Young for the remainder of the season after being released by the Toronto Raptors.
The Timberwolves have potenatially two open roster spots after Justin Jackson’s 10-day expires in a few days. The Wolves could benefit by adding another frontcourt player.
The 76ers will have two open roster spots following the conclusion of Darius Bazley‘s 10-day deal on Friday. The Sixers are one of the teams who could most use Muscala, particularly with Joel Embiid remaining sidelined.
The Knicks have one open roster spot and could have two more once the players on 10-day contracts run out. Jacob Toppin and DaQuan Jeffries are the players on the 10-day deals. The Knicks desperately could use help in the frontcourt with injuries to OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, and Mitchell Robinson.
Joe Harris, Danuel House Jr., Robin Lopez, and perhaps Cory Joseph are the most likely players who have been bought out to sign with a playoff team.
Julius Randle and OG Anunoby Updates
Anunoby should get re-evaluated shortly, perhaps as early as tomorrow, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv.Begley added that Anunoby has not started shooting but hasn’t suffered any setbacks. While there is no set timeline for his return, Anunoby could return in mid-March.
Randle hasn’t been cleared to practice, but Begley said there was no reason to believe he’d suffered any setback in his rehab. Begley added that Randle could still undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. However, there is optimism that the 29-year-old power forward can return this season.
Begley said there is some risk of Randle returning this year:
One concern? The possibility of re-injury. If Randle plays and hurts his shoulder again, he could be left with a chronic condition limiting him well beyond this season. So, I think that’s a factor in any decisions made going forward. Randle, obviously, wants to play. He’s been working out twice a day to get back on the court. So all of those signs point to an eventual return. If I had to guess, Anunoby returns before Randle. But both players need to clear more hurdles before they can get back on the floor.
New York (35-24) has lost seven of their last 10. As a result of this swoon, the Knicks are just one and one-half games ahead of the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. The Knicks conclude their four-game homestand against Golden State on Thursday and may again be without Jalen Brunson.
Brunson missed Tuesday’s loss against New Orleans due to neck spasms. Meanwhile, Isaiah Hartenstein, who also sat out Tuesday, is off the injury report. Hartenstein had missed four of the last seven games with a sore Achilles.
Andrew Wiggins Remains Out
The Golden State Warriors (30-27) are playing arguably their best basketball of the season, having won eight of their last 10. The Warriors got Chris Paul back last night. But it appears that they will be without Andrew Wiggins for the foreseeable future.
Wiggins is away from the team for personal reasons, and it is unknown when he will return.
“We don’t know,” Steve Kerr said when asked how long Wiggins will be out. “We’ll obviously respect Andrew’s wishes for this to remain private for private and personal reasons. Then we’ll just go from there.
Moses Moody started at small forward in the Warriors 123-112 victory over the Wizards. Moody contributed 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting, all four shots being triples, three rebounds and two steals. Moody, who will likely start against the Knicks, averages 13.6 points while compiling a shooting slash line of .571/.455/.769 as a starter.

Even Damian Lillard admits to knowing the trade that sent him from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Milwaukee Bucks would be hard on him personally. He spoke about as much during a recent interview with Sports Illustrated and detailed just how hard it’s been and specifically the magnitude of how lonely it’s felt being without his family. Lillard, who began by talking about how tough it is being away from his kids, offered some insight into the night-and-day differences, beginning with not having his family around. “Being away from my kids is tough. In Portland, my life was set up. My mom was down the street; my brother was the other way down the street. My sister was down the street. My kids in school. Just my whole life was set up perfectly right there. It was a great situation. So just leaving that behind alone is a lot. And then you add the basketball side to it and that is what it is,” Lillard said. Missing out on times when his family or friends would come over or they’d go to dinner, Lillard told Sports Illustrated it’s been tough because he’s “filled up by those people [his family].” The drastic change from the city where he spent his entire career since being drafted No. 6 overall in the 2012 NBA Draft is tough to read, but it also shows how tough life can be for professional athletes, especially those amid a drastic change in where they call “home.” Lillard was asked what his life was like in Milwaukee, and he gave about as blunt and honest of an answer as imaginable. “Bro, go to practice, go home, watch boxing, play video games. Man, I type in [boxing website] FightHype on YouTube 100 times and be praying for something new to be on there. Seriously, I don’t have much of a life. But that’s what comes with making a big boy decision. You got to be down for that and figure it out,” Lillard told Sports Illustrated. The 33-year-old guard has been an integral component alongside fellow star Giannis Antetokounmpo in the team’s success to begin the year. He’s averaging 24.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists while shooting 42.5 percent from the field. The Bucks are 38-21 currently, and while they’ve gone through a bit of turmoil with the coaching change that led to Doc Rivers taking over, they sit just one game back of the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, behind the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This trade from last offseason could come back to bite the Braves
Alex Anthopoulos is one of the best general managers in all of sports, not just the game of baseball. The Braves have won six straight division titles along with a World Series under his watch since he took over as GM ahead of the 2018 season, and they are set up for future success better than any other organization in the sport. It really is the golden era of baseball in Atlanta all over again, but that doesn’t mean every move Anthopoulos has made has worked out in the team’s favor. Last offseason, the Braves made a couple of head-scratching trades that don’t necessarily look like home runs. The most notable was the acquisition of Sean Murphy. Murphy was fantastic for the Braves last season, particularly in the first half; however, Anthopoulos moved William Contreras and several other prospects in the trade. Contreras was already an All-Star caliber catcher for the Braves, and he went on to lead all catchers in fWAR for the Brewers in 2023. To say the Braves lost the Murphy trade would be jumping the gun. It’s far too early to come to conclusions, but it is possible they may have been better off just riding with Contreras rather than swinging a blockbuster trade. With that being said, nobody is unhappy having Murphy in Atlanta long-term; the other trade Alex Anthopoulos swung last offseason is much more of a head-scratcher. The Braves bullpen desperately needed a worthwhile addition, but instead of spending some money on the open market, Anthopolous made a trade with the Tigers for Joe Jimenez, sending highly regarded outfield prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy to Detroit. Like Murphy, Jimenez wasn’t bad for the Braves last season by any means. He actually turned into one of the most reliable weapons out of the bullpen for Brian Snitker by the end of the year, but it was a steep price to pay for a reliever entering the final year of his contract. After a stellar 2022 campaign, Malloy had become arguably the top position player prospect in the Braves farm system, and he’s done nothing but impress since the trade. In 135 games for the Tigers AAA affiliate, Malloy blasted a career high 23 homers and got on base at a .417 clip, good for an OPS of nearly .900. He looks every bit the part of an everyday major-leaguer and could have been the Braves long-term answer in left field. The Braves can feel slightly better about the trade because they were able to re-sign Jimenez to a three-year contract this offseason. Still, it doesn’t matter how you slice it. Trading away a potential everyday player before he even reaches the majors for a rental reliever is not good business. If Malloy’s success continues at the next level, it might go down as the worst move of Alex Anthopoulos’ tenure as Braves general manager.

Comments from general manager Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus on Tuesday indicated the team was leaning toward trading Fields and drafting a quarterback. Justin Fields’ trade value was estimated in the first round As previously discussed on CCS, a report last Tuesday by Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz put Fields’ trade value at a late first-round pick before the combine. That was up from where league executives saw Fields value during the 2023 season. Fields trade value is now reportedly closer to where it was during the season. The Chicago Bears likely can’t fetch a first for Fields now According to Mike Florio with NBC Sports, Fields’ expected trade value would be closer to a second-round pick with a conditional pick next spring: One league source suggested on Tuesday that the Bears should be looking for a second-round pick in 2024 and a conditional pick in 2025, based on his performance this season. It’s hard to trade losers for as much as winners Florio’s report came after Eberflus reminded the world what Fields struggled at–winning. Eberflus said he wanted a quarterback capable of sustaining drives and scoring, especially in the fourth quarter and in the two-minute offense. Those traits of Fields aren’t selling points to the Pittsburgh Steelers or Atlanta Falcons. And they could harm negotiations as Poles tries to put together a more fit team for their next quarterback.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Brian Hoyer appeared on “Good Morning Football” on Tuesday and responded to former signal-caller Johnny Manziel’s recent criticism of him. The former Texas A M star was selected by Cleveland in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Manziel played just 14 games, making eight starts across two seasons, before being cut in March 2016. Hoyer started a career-high 13 games for the Browns in 2014, leading the team to seven wins while posting a 55.3% completion percentage, 3,326 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The Michigan State product had just a 76.5 passer rating but led the NFL in yards per completion (13.7).

With the Buffalo Bills expected to move on from their star receiver Gabe Davis this offseason, there will be a need for them to sign another high-caliber receiver, especially with the future of their other star wideout, Stefon Diggs, in question . With free agency coming up quickly, a star receiver from an NFC North team will likely be a free agent this offseason and could be a top target for the Bills. The Bills could have an interest in Chicago Bears receiver Darnell Mooney, especially if either Diggs or Davis leaves Buffalo. As Pro Football Network’s Tony Catalina explains: “Mooney is a field-stretcher that Allen will love throwing the long ball to, and adding him to the roster may not cost an aggressive amount to do so. It won’t be the perfect solution to a room that could potentially lose a significant amount of production, but for the money and the need, Mooney makes a lot of sense.” Mooney has been in the league since 2020 and has racked up 2,593 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, including a 1,055-yard season in 2021. While Mooney has not been given many opportunities for growth in Chicago, he could excel with Josh Allen as his quarterback. Mooney could be an excellent fit with Allen since the receiver excels at creating separation downfield, something the Bills offense does often. While he has not been a consistent No. 1 or 2 receiver, he could give Buffalo some much-needed speed for the offense.

Detroit has had strong depth on the back end for the majority of the season. With a trade market that isn’t the most robust, it appears they may be looking to take advantage of that as ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reports that the Red Wings are listening to offers on some of their blueliners. While Kaplan’s report doesn’t specify which players in particular they’re listening on, the shorter list might be who they likely wouldn’t consider moving. Moritz Seider is clearly off the table while Jake Walman is having a career year and is on a value contract and likely isn’t going to be someone GM Steve Yzerman would be willing to part with. Beyond those two, however, all bets could be off. Shayne Gostisbehere has been strong offensively as expected, notching 36 points in 57 games to lead all Detroit rearguards in scoring. He’s on a one-year, $4.125M contract and a playoff contender could look to try to add him. That said, the Red Wings are squarely in the playoff mix themselves and moving out a key contributor might not be the right course of action if they’re trying to end their postseason drought. Among their other defenders, Justin Holl hasn’t had quite the season Detroit was hoping for when they gave him $3.4M per year for three seasons. He has often been the odd man out in their defensive rotation so it stands to reason that they might want to try to get out of those final two years. A right-shot defender, Holl’s handedness could give him a potential suitor or two. The late-summer acquisition of Jeff Petry helped create the logjam on the back end. With double retention on his contract, his price tag is down to a manageable $2.343M through next season and is someone a few more teams could fit in. However, he has a 15-team no-trade clause and might not be inclined to leave his hometown team. Detroit also cannot pay down his contract anymore as two retentions is the maximum on a player. As for their other left-shot blueliners, Ben Chiarot’s $4.75M price tag through 2025-26 might be difficult for a lot of teams to absorb and while he isn’t playing big minutes like he did in Montreal, he’s still a top-four option for them. Olli Maatta, meanwhile, is more affordable at $3M through next season although he’s being used exclusively on the third pairing; that AAV for that role is a little high. With Simon Edvinsson making good progress with AHL Grand Rapids, there’s less risk in moving a left-shot option knowing that the 2021 first-round is close to being ready to step in. With the Red Wings holding down a wild-card spot, it would be surprising to see Yzerman sell like he did last season. Frankly, adding to his group would be more than defensible. But with the market for blueliners not being the greatest, it appears as if he’s open to selling one even though there isn’t necessarily an obvious candidate to move for top value. Detroit is one of the few playoff teams with ample cap space so they will have the ability to get creative between now and the March 8th trade deadline; clearing out a veteran on the back end would only open up more flexibility on that front unless they opt for a player-for-player swap. Either way, it appears as if they’ll be a team to keep an eye on in the coming days.
