In a proactive move to address the potential issue of drug abuse among players in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Chairman Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye has unveiled the implementation of random drug tests. These tests, facilitated by the acquisition of testing kits from the United Kingdom, underscore the NPFL’s dedication to participating in the global fight against illicit substance use in sports.
The league is unwavering in its commitment to rooting out drug use and has outlined plans to collaborate with government agencies for a comprehensive awareness campaign. This initiative will extend to MatchDay stadium boards and various media channels to educate and inform stakeholders about the consequences of illicit substance use in sports.
Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye emphasized the league’s dedication to aligning with the NFF, CAF, FIFA, and the global campaign to eradicate illicit substance use in sports. He stated, “We are ready to take action against illicit drug use in the league, and we intend to work closely with relevant government agencies to launch an enlightening campaign. This effort will involve displays on our MatchDay stadium boards and dissemination through various media channels.”
This comes at a crucial time when star player Kevin Durant of the Sun’s faces a potential 8-month ban on doping, highlighting the league’s proactive measures in maintaining integrity and fair play.
