Flyers Can Still Get First-Round Pick in Sean Walker Trade

We had our first blockbuster trade go down on Wednesday night ahead of the March 8 NHL trade deadline, as the Calgary Flames sent veteran defenseman Chris Tanev, with double retention, to the Dallas Stars for a second-round pick, a conditional third-round pick, and Artem Grushnikov. Although this is the first domino in a Sean Walker trade for the Philadelphia Flyers, a first-round pick is most certainly not out of the question.
Whether the Flyers decide to trade Walker is one thing, but the return they get in a Walker trade is another. Here’s the thing with Walker, especially compared to Tanev: Walker is younger, plays power play and penalty kill for the Flyers, has a smaller cap hit, and has been the better player this season.
Walker is 29, while Tanev is 34 and has played north of 70 regular season games once in the last decade.
Some may argue that Tanev’s rugged, shot-blocking style makes him better equipped for playoff hockey and more appealing to contenders, but since Tanev became an NHL regular, he’s made it past the second round only twice.
In short, looking the part and playing the part are two different things.
Even if the Flyers decide that trading Walker is what they want to do, they’ll need to find a worthy dance partner that will offer up a first-round pick. Some contenders that still have theirs include the Vegas Golden Knights, the Stars, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Edmonton Oilers, and the New York Rangers.
The Minnesota Wild, who have made up significant ground in the playoff chase despite captain Jared Spurgeon’s season-ending injury, also desperately need blueline help. They just signed Marat Khusnutdinov and are committed to keeping veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury on their roster instead of trading him away.
Ultimately, what Walker fetches the Flyers is not for them to decide. On the other hand, plenty of teams out there still need help defensively, especially on the right side.
The Flyers will not sell on Walker for cheap, and the closer the NHL trade deadline gets, the more desperate teams will get to bolster their roster in pursuit of the Stanley Cup. All the Flyers need is one bidding war to break out for things to really take off.

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are in no real position to add at the trade deadline and take a swing at a big fish, but general manager Kyle Dubas has set specific goals. According to Dubas, he wants to make the Penguins a younger team while retaining some of the oldest superstars in the league and contend for a Stanley Cup. Regardless of what direction the Penguins head in at the deadline, they will likely have an eye on younger talent that can help them soon. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Penguins have been linked to a young defender still looking for a full-time role in the NHL. Pagnotta linked the Penguins to 22-year-old Philip Broberg of the Edmonton Oilers. Broberg is a left-shot defender with only 79 games in three years of NHL experience under his belt. In that time, he’s scored a pair of goals and nine assists for 11 points. “Broberg wants an opportunity to play full time NHL minutes and he isn’t getting that right now with the Edmonton Oilers, who are willing to trade him in the right deal,” Pagnotta writes. “Will Broberg be packaged for an upgrade, or used as a piece to take on a heavy contract?” The Penguins have a surplus of blue-liners, but Broberg is a player who could help down the line. In the final year of his entry-level contract, Broberg is due for an extension this summer and will be a restricted free agent. Broberg being linked to the Penguins may also have something to do with the Oilers being linked to Jake Guentzel. The Penguins are likely preparing to trade Guentzel, and the Oilers are a top team in those discussions. Broberg may just fall as a piece of the return for Pittsburgh, but it’s a big name on trade boards. While the Penguins are still deciding the best course of action for the 2023-24 season, they are certainly lining up to be active in some way. They already added Emil Bemstrom as a good safety net, and now being linked to another youthful player should help with that goal of getting younger.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were extremely lucky that cornerback Joey Porter Jr. fell into the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The organization has been desperate for a true lockdown corner for a long time and the Penn State product showed flashes of being a franchise guy at the position going forward in his rookie season. It was nearly a miracle that he slipped out of the initial round as an up-and-coming prospect, but holes remain for General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin. The biggest question is if they will make a big move in free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft. A lot of the talk surrounding the Steelers and potential for a big trade has revolved around the quarterback position. That is still in play given the uncertainty with Kenny Pickett, but Pittsburgh may be inclined to take the traditional route and put Mason Rudolph up against Pickett in a competition battle come training camp. Where else could a splash be made? Look no further than the team aggressively going after someone who could complement Porter perfectly. The Kansas City Chiefs are on the brink of being one of the best dynasties of all time. Having a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes never hurts, but it takes everyone to put together a championship-caliber season, let alone several in a short timespan. What stood out most about the 2023 Chiefs was their incredible defense led by Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. One of the more important pieces to that unit was cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. The ballhawk has been on the receiving end of 10 interceptions in his four-year career. The prospect of him remaining in Kansas City is on the table, but recent reports claim that he and his camp may be open to signing a franchise tag and then exploring a trade. Porter Jr. and Sneed could make for a perfect duo. Pittsburgh is light in the cornerback room. Patrick Peterson joined the unit in 2023, (as did Porter), but there is a chance that Peterson is a cap casualty entering his second and final year of the deal he agreed upon with the Steelers. There isn’t much depth at the position which means the draft will certainly be a tool that is used to bolster the secondary, but Pittsburgh has never been known to welcome a youthful group to the starting unit immediately. In comes the idea of Sneed as a possible trade target for Khan. It will certainly come with a price tag. After he signs the franchise tag, any team that is interested in him will have to agree to a long-term deal before anything officially gets done. For the Steelers, it might just make sense to give him a lucrative contract and pair him with Porter for at least three seasons. The issue with this becomes the financial piece. The potential price of Sneed could, and probably will, turn Khan off. The topic of conversation will be surrounding what the organization needs most. If the two-time Super Bowl champion is available, not doing any kind of due diligence on a potential acquisition would be foolish. Overall, though, a combination of Sneed and the emerging Porter Jr. could make for a dominant secondary. Steelers Need Help In More Ways Than One Pittsburgh needs help at quarterback, cornerback, offensive/defensive line, wide receiver in addition to many other areas. The idea of spending several assets on a top corner like Sneed may seem absurd, but it’s a decision that could solidify the secondary for many years. It might lead to Sneed being signed for several years, but his play-making ability and playoff pedigree might just be a perfect fit.

Blake Snell may be modifying his contract demands in order to find a team before the start of the regular season. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Snell is increasingly open to a shorter deal structured similarly to the one the Chicago Cubs agreed to with Cody Bellinger. Such a deal would likely include multiple opt-outs. “Snell is willing to do one of those Bellinger-type deals, a short-term deal with opt-outs,” Heyman said. “They did talk to the Yankees about this, so I’m sure they’re willing to do it with other teams as well.” Snell had been seeking a long-term contract with a high annual value, and reportedly turned down six years and $150 million from the Yankees earlier in the offseason. At this point, it looks as though he will have to compromise on one of those priorities in order to find a landing spot. A short-term deal with a high average annual value is probably his best bet right now. The reigning NL Cy Young winner remains available with the start of the season a month away. The Yankees have been consistently linked to him, but even a short-term contract may not be doable for them.

Many MLB analysts are predicting the Boston Red Sox to finish in last place in the ultra-competitive AL East for the third straight season in 2024. Still, relief pitcher Liam Hendriks chose to sign a two-year, $10M contract with the club last week. The three-time All-Star appeared on “The Greg Hill Show” on Wednesday and explained why he picked Beantown as his next home. “The Red Sox were one of the teams that reached out pretty early on among, we probably had 15 or 16 teams that reached out,” Hendriks said. “The Red Sox, the big thing for me, they were very adamant that I could pitch this year. That was a non-negotiable to me. The teams that said we’ll see how it goes — no, you’re out. I wanted to make sure I had an opportunity to pitch this year.” The 35-year-old is recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent last August, and earlier this offseason set a Feb. 15 deadline to sign with a team. If Hendriks had remained unsigned, he would’ve continued his rehab on his own and thrown for potential teams in July. “Obviously, if a setback happens then we readjust,” the right-hander said. “But having the option at the start to pitch in 2024 — and that was Brandon Henry the head trainer (for Boston) — he was like no, I don’t envision a place where you do not pitch for the 2024 Boston Red Sox. And that was something that was really important to me.” Hendriks made a triumphant return to the mound with the Chicago White Sox last May after missing the beginning of the year due to his battle with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hendriks was limited to five appearances though, as he soon went on the injured list with elbow inflammation. He’s only two seasons removed from his most recent All-Star campaign, however. Hendriks was voted into the Midsummer Classic in 2019, 2021 and 2022 and finished in the top-10 in AL Cy voting in 2020 (ninth) and 2021 (eighth). He said that he wasn’t sold on the consensus low expectations that the Red Sox won’t be a winning team this season. “As far as winning goes, I think Boston has always been a team that has overperformed what it says on paper,” Hendriks said. “From the outside looking in, they always seem to have a hell of a lot more fun than a lot of other teams. They’re less structured, they go about doing their business but they always pull for each other. They’re more than the sum of their parts, where other teams you see what they are on paper and that’s pretty much what you’re going to get.”

There has been yet another indication that New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen won’t dramatically alter the 2024 NFL Draft order by trading up from overall pick No. 6 to acquire a replacement for quarterback Daniel Jones. “There does not seem to be much of an appetite within the Giants hierarchy to trade up into the top three (picks),” Giants beat writer Paul Schwartz explained in a New York Post piece published on Wednesday afternoon. “That appetite could be whetted if the Giants, during the interview process, are blown away by one of the prospects. A trade-up to No. 3 would be extremely costly — they would have to give up the No. 6 pick and possibly three second-round picks — and the Giants do not view themselves as one player away from anything.” It was reported earlier this month that Schoen, Giants head coach Brian Daboll, offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Mike Kafka and players in the locker room all hold a strong belief that Jones can still prove himself to be the club’s long-term answer at quarterback. Schoen did, however, acknowledge on Tuesday that Jones’ concerning injury history is “something [they’ve] gotta consider” this offseason. Jones has missed a total of nine games since the start of the 2021 season because of neck issues and is currently recovering from the torn ACL he suffered on Nov. 5. Schoen said on Tuesday it’s hoped Jones will be ready for training camp this summer. “They currently have four picks in the top 70 selections and believe they can restock their offense,” Schwartz added, “giving Jones a true No. 1 wide receiver, as well as another offensive lineman and maybe find an edge rusher.” In a mock draft updated on Wednesday morning, Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN predicted the Giants will spend choice No. 6 on Washington Huskies WR Rome Odunze after quarterbacks go off the board via the first three picks of the player-selection process. Meanwhile, Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports has repeatedly mocked North Carolina Tar Heels signal-caller Drake Maye to the Giants at No. 6 overall. The Giants are stuck with the four-year contract Jones signed last March through at least the 2024 season. Assuming Schwartz is correct, Schoen seemingly wants to get the most out of the club’s financial investment in Jones ahead of next winter.

With the Buffalo Bills expected to move on from their star receiver Gabe Davis this offseason, there will be a need for them to sign another high-caliber receiver, especially with the future of their other star wideout, Stefon Diggs, in question . With free agency coming up quickly, a star receiver from an NFC North team will likely be a free agent this offseason and could be a top target for the Bills. The Bills could have an interest in Chicago Bears receiver Darnell Mooney, especially if either Diggs or Davis leaves Buffalo. As Pro Football Network’s Tony Catalina explains: “Mooney is a field-stretcher that Allen will love throwing the long ball to, and adding him to the roster may not cost an aggressive amount to do so. It won’t be the perfect solution to a room that could potentially lose a significant amount of production, but for the money and the need, Mooney makes a lot of sense.” Mooney has been in the league since 2020 and has racked up 2,593 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, including a 1,055-yard season in 2021. While Mooney has not been given many opportunities for growth in Chicago, he could excel with Josh Allen as his quarterback. Mooney could be an excellent fit with Allen since the receiver excels at creating separation downfield, something the Bills offense does often. While he has not been a consistent No. 1 or 2 receiver, he could give Buffalo some much-needed speed for the offense.
