Heartbreaking Loss: Kansas State Volleyball Battles but Falls to UCF in Thrilling 5-Set Match
Kansas State volleyball fought hard but ultimately fell short in a dramatic five-set match against UCF on Wednesday night at The Venue in Orlando, Florida. Despite a standout performance by Aniya Clinton, who registered 25 kills, the Wildcats were unable to hold off the Knights, losing 25-10, 25-27, 27-25, 19-25, 11-15.
The match was a back-and-forth affair, with Kansas State taking an early 2-1 set lead before UCF mounted a comeback to claim the decisive fifth set. The Wildcats, who dropped to 10-14 overall and 8-7 in Big 12 play, struggled with consistency in crucial moments, as UCF (9-15, 2-13 Big 12) capitalized on their defensive strengths.
Despite Kansas State’s offensive dominance, outpacing the Knights 71 kills to 63, UCF’s defense made the difference. The Knights forced 24 attack errors from the Wildcats and dominated at the net, blocking 11 K-State attempts compared to just 5 for the Wildcats. UCF’s defensive efforts were particularly evident in the final set, as they stifled Kansas State’s attack and sealed the victory.
Clinton’s 25 kills were a bright spot for the Wildcats, with three players finishing in double digits for kills. Alongside Clinton, both Ella Mae McDonald and Lacey Bowden contributed solid performances, with McDonald adding 14 kills and Bowden chipping in 11. However, the Wildcats’ offensive firepower wasn’t enough to overcome the errors and UCF’s strong blocking.

In the first set, Kansas State struggled out of the gate, losing 25-10 in what was a one-sided opener. However, the Wildcats rebounded in the second set, eking out a 27-25 victory to even the match at 1-1. The third set saw another thrilling finish, with Kansas State holding off a late UCF charge to win 27-25. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the fourth set saw UCF regroup to take it 25-19, and in the deciding fifth set, the Knights proved too much, winning 15-11 to close out the match.
Despite the loss, Kansas State remains in the hunt for a strong finish to the regular season, with key conference matchups still to come. The Wildcats will look to bounce back as they return home for their next contest, hoping to regroup and build on the positive moments from their tough five-set battle against UCF.
