Kenny Payne comments following Louisville’s 25-point loss at No. 10 Duke
Louisville now sits at 8-20 on the season

Many, if not most, myself included, would say that Louisville should never be a 20-point dog in a game, on the road or not. However, that was the case on Thursday night when the Cardinals visited No. 10 Duke. Among the glaring concerns for UofL, once again, was the lack of a defensive presence, which allowed the hosts to connect on 56% of its shot attempts in an 84-59 victory to cover the sizeable spread.

Louisville is now 8-20 on the season and 3-14 in the ACC. The Cardinals have now lost 20 games in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history. Duke improves to 22-6, 13-4.

Visiting with media at the arena, UofL head coach Kenny Payne pointed out the difficulty of winning at Cameron Indoor and the qualities it would take to pull off such an upset.

“To come in here and get wins very rarely happens. Top ten team,” Payne said. “So when you when you walk into this building and you’re ready to play a team like this, there’s a fight that’s required. And that fight means for 40 minutes. You don’t have to be perfect, but you better be disciplined. You better be tough. You better be resilient in how you handle things. And you better be precise in how you’re going to play offense. So with that said, we came in here and we talked about the big key to the game is rebound. They beat us 24 to 43. You can’t beat this team if you’re not gonna rebound.

“We came in this game, based off our first game, how we moved the ball and we caused them problems by moving the ball and attacking the lane, it took us a half to sort of figure that out. We talked about defensively being solid, creating and making them miss shots because they got good shooters and they score in bunches. They got a bunch of guys that can really score the ball and they’re very good passing team. They had 23 assists to our 11 assists.”

(Watch all of Payne’s comments in the video below. Note, some of the questions may be hard to hear.)

UofL had four players in double figures, with Tre White topping the team with 15 points. Brandon Huntley-Hatfield had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ty-Laur Johnson also scored 11 points, while Skyy Clark added 10.

The Cardinals shot just 41% from the floor, including a dismal 3 of 17 behind the three-point line. As Payne mentioned, UofL was beat on the boards by 19 and the Blue Devils dished out a dozen more assists.

Louisville will close its regular season with three straight games at the KFC Yum! Center. Up next is Syracuse on Saturday at 1pm.

Oftentimes big games on the college football schedule are circled well in advance because of what happened the year prior. Whether coaches and players admit it, revenge can be a key motivating factor for certain opponents. The sting of a crucial loss can linger for months and can resurface as the rematch looms closer.

Every game in college football is just as important as the last with high stakes week to week. Even with the expanded College Football Playoff, one defeat could change the trajectory of a season for contenders, making the path to the postseason that much more difficult. The 2023 season saw plenty of examples as a long list of challenges fought for one of the four spots.

As the 2024 college football season approaches, it is time to take an early look ahead at which teams could avenge a crucial loss from last season with a rematch next fall.

Below is a closer look at 10 college football teams that could do so:

KANSAS STATE OVER OKLAHOMA STATE

(Photo: Getty)
Kansas State ultimately fell short of defending its Big 12 title last season with three losses in conference play. The first defeat came against Oklahoma State in early October and put the Wildcats at a disadvantage in the Big 12 race the rest of the way with potential complicated tiebreakers. Kansas State is once again projected as a top contender to win its second Big 12 championship in three seasons heading into 2024. The Wildcats get the Cowboys at home in Manhattan where they shut them out, 48-0, back in 2022. The matchup this upcoming season is set for Sept. 28.

NOTRE DAME OVER LOUISVILLE

(Photo: Getty)
Notre Dame still finished with 10-wins last season under Marcus Freeman, but the Fighting Irish could have been in discussion for a potential return to a New Year’s Six bowl had it not been for the loss at Louisville in early October. Notre Dame was unable to keep pace with the Cardinals in the second half, giving up 26 points in the final two quarters. The Fighting Irish get a chance to avenge that defeat on Sept. 28 in South Bend as both teams welcome new transfer quarterbacks in 2024. Notre Dame expects to contend for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff.

NEBRASKA OVER WISCONSIN

(Photo: Getty)
Nebraska again posted a losing record and did not reach a bowl game for the seventh-consecutive season in 2023. The Huskers suffered seven losses, including all four games in November by one possession after moving to 5-3 at the end of October. Among those defeats was a 24-17 overtime loss at Wisconsin. Nebraska jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but the offense went stagnant and the Badgers eventually prevailed. The Huskers are 1-11 against Wisconsin since joining the Big Ten in 2011. Matt Rhule and Nebraska host the Badgers on Nov. 23 inside Memorial Stadium with a chance to end a 10-game losing streak to the Big Ten rival.

OREGON OVER WASHINGTON

(Photo: Getty)
Dan Lanning is 0-3 against rival Washington in the Border War since taking over at Oregon in 2022. The Ducks dropped both meetings versus the Huskies last season. All three defeats came by three points. Oregon had a four-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in Seattle back on Oct. 14, but a questionable decision to go for it on fourth down near midfield ultimately led to a Washington go-ahead touchdown. The Ducks also lost to the Huskies in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The West Coast rivals meet again in 2024, only this time as members of the Big Ten to close out the regular season on Nov. 30 in Eugene.

LSU OVER ALABAMA

(Photo: Getty)
Will LSU contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2024? One of the crucial games on that path is a rivalry showdown with Alabama in Death Valley on Nov. 9. The Tigers had a seven-point lead on the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa last season before giving up 21-unanswered en route to a 42-28 loss. Jayden Daniels and Jalen Milroe dueled with impressive performances, but Daniels left with an injury. Now Garret Nussmeier takes the reins of the LSU offense and goes up against new-look Alabama with head coach Kalen DeBoer.

TEXAS OVER OKLAHOMA

The late fourth-quarter defeat against Red River Rival Oklahoma had little effect on the overall accomplishments for Texas in 2023 with a Big 12 title and first-ever trip to the College Football Playoff. Still, the loss was crushing after allowing the Sooners to go 75 yards on five plays to score the game-winning touchdown at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The longtime Big 12 foes make the big move to the SEC in 2024, but the bitter rivalry remains intact with a meeting on Oct. 12.

CLEMSON OVER FLORIDA STATE

(Photo: Ken Ruinard, USA TODAY Sports)
Of the four losses Clemson suffered last season, only one came at home as eventual ACC champion Florida State handed the Tigers just their second defeat in Death Valley since 2014. Now Clemson makes the trip to Tallahassee on Oct. 5 with a chance to snap the Seminoles’ nine-game home win streak — which began after a loss to the Tigers in 2022. In fact, Clemson has three straight victories at Doak Campbell Stadium since 2016. If Dabo Swinney and Clemson want to reclaim the ACC in 2024, a win against Florida State could be key.

TENNESSEE OVER FLORIDA

(Photo: Getty)
Tennessee had little to no shot at an SEC East title after suffering an early-season loss at Florida in September. To compound the misery, the Gators failed to make a bowl game. If the Volunteers want any chance at contending for a potential bid into the expanded College Football Playoff in 2024, avenging that loss to rival Florida is crucial. Tennessee hosts Billy Napier and the Gators on Oct. 12 at Neyland Stadium where Florida has won 11 of the past 17 meetings since the annual rivalry renewed in 1990.

OHIO STATE OVER MICHIGAN

(Photo: Getty)
Ohio State gets another shot at avenging a loss to rival Michigan at the end of the 2024 season. The Buckeyes have dropped three-straight to the Wolverines as pressure builds on Ryan Day to reclaim command of the Big Ten. Ohio State went all in on roster changes and staff adjustments in an effort to unseat Michigan, which is now led by first-year coach Sherrone Moore. Because there are no longer divisions in the Big Ten, the meeting on Nov. 30 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus could be the first of back-to-back matchups. If the Buckeyes and Wolverines secure the top spots in the conference standings, a rematch in the Big Ten title game looms the following weekend.

GEORGIA OVER ALABAMA

(Photo: John David Mercer, USA TODAY Sports)
Alabama snapped a 29-game win streak for Georgia and ended the historic run of the two-time reigning national champions with a victory against the Bulldogs in the SEC title game last season. But now that Nick Saban is no longer in charge of the Crimson Tide, Kirby Smart and Georgia could potentially regain dominance of the SEC. In 2024, the two rivals meet in the regular season for just the third time in 16 years. The Bulldogs travel to Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on Sept. 28.

No. 22 Louisville (22-7, 11-5) hosts Florida State (20-8, 11-5) on Thursday evening for the program’s final home game of the regular season.

Louisville will also honor three graduate transfers that joined the program prior to the season in Sydney Taylor, Nina Rickards and Kiki Jefferson.

“Not only really, really talented basketball players, but they’re great people and they have brought a lot to our program, a lot to the city, our university, just with how they handle themselves, how they carry themselves,” UofL head coach Jeff Walz said. “And, it’s been a joy to coach them.”

A trio of seniors – Olivia Cochran, Merissah Russell and Eylia Love – have elected not to participate in the ceremony for departing players creating the expectation that all three will return for another season at Louisville.

“Lately, I think their plans are to come back,” Walz said, continuing, “We’ll see how it all shakes out, but they all know that they are wanted and they built themselves a legacy here. You know, (Olivia Cochran and Merissah Russell) have been apart already of three elite eight teams and the final four team. So that’s pretty darn impressive for a career. So we’ll, but yes, I do expect them to come back.”

Florida State will arrive in Louisville on a three-game win streak. Averaging 80.9 points per game, the Seminoles lead the ACC and are No. 12 nationally in scoring, yet the team sits last in the league by allowing 71.9 points per outing.

“They are a ball club that is getting up and down the floor,” Walz said. “They are looking to score as quick as they can, so you need to sprint back on defense.

“We’re going to get their best shot and we know that. It’s a big game for both of us.”

Watch the preview press conference with head coach Jeff Walz, along with Sydney Taylor, Nina Rickards and Kiki Jefferson in the videos below.
