Eagles that cannot fly will face off against fragile Toffees again.

Everton, playing with 10 players, are yet to secure a victory in the FA Cup in London since the 1995 final. Their recent 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park means that a replay in Merseyside will determine which team advances to the fourth round.

When Everton defeated Palace 3-2 earlier this season, there were two goals in the first five minutes; however, dreams of a repeat performance were quickly scuppered; the only noteworthy attack in the first fifteen minutes came from João Virgínia’s save of a bobbling Jeffrey Schlupp shot from the edge of the area after three minutes. As Arnaut Danjuma started to prove his worth, chances increased. He first saw a strike deflect into the side netting and then sting Dean Henderson’s gloves twice before the 20-minute mark. Soon after, the Palace keeper dodged the throng of bodies to react skillfully with his feet, stopping a James Garner corner from sneaking in at his near post. The closest Palace got before HT was Jefferson Lerma’s strong effort that went just over the bar.

Virgínia was busier for thirty seconds right after the break than he was for the whole first half. He palmed away an effort from Eberechi Eze and then clutched Lerma’s header from the ensuing corner. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did a good job of latching onto a through ball just past the hour mark, but Henderson held his timid shot. That did start a winning run for Sean Dyche’s team, as Danjuma tested Henderson once more after close calls from Amadou Onana and Jack Harrison.

Referee Chris Kavanagh red-carded Calvert-Lewin for a shoddy challenge on Nathaniel Clyne on minute 78, reducing the Toffees to 10 men after the VAR flagged the play. But the next meaningful opportunity went to the visitors when Garner missed a 10-yard attempt. Deep into extra time, Eze came dangerously close to winning it, but both teams will go into the hat for Monday’s fourth round draw. Having ended a run of four away FA Cup losses to Premier League teams, Everton will be the more satisfied. In contrast, Roy Hodgson’s team has only triumphed once in the previous ten games across all categories.
