Could the NHL’s Hit King Be the Perfect Fit for the Hurricanes?
The Carolina Hurricanes are in the final stages of assembling their roster for the 2024-25 NHL season, having recently re-signed restricted free agent Seth Jarvis to a long-term, eight-year contract. However, with the unfortunate news that forward Jesper Fast will miss the entire season due to neck surgery, there remains a potential gap in the lineup that the Hurricanes may need to address.
One intriguing option still available in the free-agent market is Cal Clutterbuck, a 36-year-old veteran who has built a reputation as the NHL’s all-time leader in hits. Clutterbuck, who has played over 1,000 career games, primarily with the Minnesota Wild and New York Islanders, remains determined to continue his career and pursue the Stanley Cup that has eluded him throughout his 17-year tenure in the league.
Clutterbuck’s style of play—characterized by relentless forechecking, physicality, and defensive reliability—could make him a valuable addition to the Hurricanes, particularly as a replacement for Fast. Although Clutterbuck no longer possesses the speed that Fast brought to the lineup, the two players posted similar offensive numbers last season, with both recording 19 points. Clutterbuck tallied seven goals and 12 assists over 82 games, marking his highest point total since the 2018-19 season.
Beyond his offensive contributions, Clutterbuck is known for his prowess on the penalty kill, an area where the Hurricanes could benefit from additional depth following Fast’s injury. Clutterbuck’s experience and ability to disrupt opponents’ plays could complement Carolina’s already strong defensive system under head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who values physical, high-energy play.
For the Hurricanes, bringing in Clutterbuck would offer a low-risk, potentially high-reward scenario. As a seasoned veteran with a wealth of experience, Clutterbuck could provide leadership and depth, both on and off the ice, to a team that has consistently performed well in the regular season but struggled to advance deep into the playoffs.
Should Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky decide to pursue Clutterbuck, the fit could be mutually beneficial. Clutterbuck would join a competitive team with legitimate Stanley Cup aspirations, while the Hurricanes would gain a gritty, reliable forward who aligns with their style of play.
In his career spanning 1,064 games, Clutterbuck has amassed 143 goals, 150 assists, and 293 points, along with his unparalleled physical presence on the ice. Whether he ultimately lands in Carolina or stays closer to home, Clutterbuck’s next move will be closely watched as teams finalize their rosters for the upcoming season.
