Veteran guard plans to sign with Knicks after buyout

Shake Milton plans to join the Knicks after clearing waivers, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Multiple contenders were reportedly interested in the 27-year-old shooting guard, who reached a buyout agreement with the Pistons Friday night, allowing him to appear in the playoffs with another team.

New York will be the third team of the season for Milton, who signed with Minnesota last summer and was shipped to Detroit at the trade deadline. He appeared in just four games for the Pistons and didn’t appear to be in the team’s long-range plans with a non-guaranteed $5MM contract for next season.

The Knicks contacted the Wolves about Milton prior to the deadline, tweets Ian Begley of SNY.

Averaging 4.9 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 42 combined games this season, Milton will provide another wing scoring threat for New York, which is dealing with injuries throughout its roster. He will compete for playing time with two other former Pistons, Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks, who were both acquired in a trade with Detroit last month.

Timberwolves signing former first-round pick to 10-day deal
The Timberwolves will sign forward T.J. Warren to a 10-day contract, pending a physical exam early this week, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Warren hasn’t played in a game this season, but according to Charania, the Wolves have monitored him throughout the year. Minnesota has been targeting wing depth, per The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski, so the team landed on Warren. Majority owner Glen Taylor told Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News and Skor North earlier this week that a small forward was the Wolves’ greatest area of need. Warren has averaged 14.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in his career while shooting 50.6% from the floor and 35.4% from beyond the arc. He had a strong start to his career after being drafted with the 14th overall pick in 2014, averaging 15.5 points per night in his first seven seasons. The N.C. State alum was a significant part of the Pacers’ 2019-20 playoff squad, averaging 19.8 PPG. That year featured a memorable stretch for Warren, who averaged 31.0 points and shot 52.4% from three in the 2020 NBA bubble, including a 53-point outing. However, a foot injury limited Warren to four games over the following two seasons, derailing his career. He signed with the Nets ahead of 2022-23 before being traded to Phoenix at the deadline. In 42 games between Brooklyn and Phoenix last season, Warren averaged 7.5 points. Justin Jackson‘s 10-day deal expires tomorrow, so the Wolves are presumably replacing Jackson with Warren. Minnesota will still have an open standard roster spot once Jackson’s deal expires and Warren’s deal is finalized.

FSU QB Jordan Travis hints at two teams he wants to play for
Quarterbacks aren’t put under the spotlight in drills at the NFL Scouting Combine until March 2, but they did juggle questions during press conferences on Friday. FSU’s Jordan Travis was one of several quarterbacks to do so, and he hinted at two teams he’s hoping to be drafted by in the 2024 NFL Draft at the end of April. Travis was asked if there are players outside his former teammates he wants to play with in the NFL and he gave two names off the two of his head — Davante Adams and George Pickens, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. The two wide receivers play for the Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers, meaning Travis would likely be happy if either team drafted him. Good news for Travis: both teams plan to add to their quarterback rooms this offseason, and he provides an intriguing option. The 23-year-old has thrown for 5,970 yards, 44 touchdowns and just seven interceptions over the past two seasons. He has also added 593 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Travis’ collegiate career met an abrupt end when he suffered a gruesome injury on Nov. 18 against North Alabama. As a result, Travis currently ranks as Pro Football Focus’ ninth-best quarterback and No. 123 overall prospect on its big board. That projects him to be a fourth-round draft pick, and it just so happens the Raiders (No. 113) and Steelers (Nos. 120 and 121) have three picks combined in the fourth round. Las Vegas will try to make a splashier move at the position this offseason. However, the same may not be able to be said about Pittsburgh. Steelers general manager Omar Khan said he has “full faith” in Kenny Pickett on Thursday, but they need to add to the room since he is the only quarterback currently under contract with the team in 2024. That could set up the perfect scenario for Travis, who could serve as Pickett’s backup and have a chance to make his case as Pittsburgh’s starter if Pickett were to struggle. Of course, Travis’ comments don’t mean he’s only interested in playing for the Raiders and Steelers, but they are certainly two teams to watch in the coming weeks.

Report reveals Buccaneers WR Mike Evans’ lofty asking price
NFL
Report reveals Buccaneers WR Mike Evans’ lofty asking price
With Baker Mayfield in line for a multi-year contract and Antoine Winfield Jr. set to receive the franchise tag, Mike Evans faces the distinct possibility of testing free agency later this month. The Buccaneers intend to keep all three members of that trio in the fold, but the latter could come with a hefty price tag. Evans aims for a deal with an annual average value in the $25M range, NFL Network’s Jeffri Chadhia reports. Securing a figure of that magnitude on a third contract would come as a surprise, as only four wideouts average $25M or more on their current deals. Given his age (31 at the start of the 2024 season), Evans will likely be hard-pressed to command a new pact that is close to the top of the market. Still, his play remained at a Pro Bowl level in 2023, the first with Mayfield at quarterback. Evans posted 1,255 yards — his highest total since 2018 — and tied for the league lead with 13 touchdowns. Having topped the 1,000-yard mark in each of his ten seasons, the second-team All-Pro will provide a high floor to the Buccaneers or a new team next season. A short-term pact could be a sound investment for Tampa Bay or an outside suitor. At a minimum, Evans’ next deal can be expected to comfortably outpace the $16.5M AAV of his previous one. That five-year accord provided major value to the Buccaneers, but the top of the market has surged in recent years. That trend could continue in 2024 with Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase and Amon-Ra St. Brown among the young wideouts eligible for mega-deals. Each member of that trio would be expected to command a more lucrative pact than Evans, but the latter could still generate a notable market for himself. The Texas A M alum went up until the start of last season during contract talks with the Buccaneers, but no agreement was reached. Reports from last month stated the sides are not close after the latest round of negotiations, meaning Evans could at least test the market once the new league year begins. Further clarity on Mayfield and Winfield (and, as such, Tampa Bay’s cap situation) will likely be in place by that point. It will be interesting to see where Evans’ asking price checks during talks with the Buccaneers or other interested parties over the coming days and weeks.

Packers could be on the verge of making a big mistake with a former first round pick in free…
The Green Bay Packers have a few things to figure out when it comes to their cornerback room and according to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, former first-rounder, C.J. Henderson, is a name to keep an eye on. This would be a mistake, even if it’s merely for depth purposes Henderson hasn’t even come close to living up to his first-round billing and in reality, he’s not that great of a player, either. He only allowed one touchdown in 2023, but that came off a career-low 198 coverage snaps. Before that, he allowed 12 touchdowns over the course of the previous three seasons, including a career-high five in 2022, per Pro Football Focus. For his career, he’s allowed 13 passing touchdowns and has just three interceptions in four total seasons. Opposing quarterbacks have averaged a 113.9 rating, since 2020, when throwing his way. Again, the idea of Henderson is for depth purposes, but with Jaire Alexander’s health issues over the last couple of seasons, Carrington Valentine’s promising yet still uncertain future, and Keisean Nixon’s upcoming free agency experience – there’s certainly a world in which the Packers could be relying on Henderson for a good chunk of snaps. Ultimately, that would not be ideal and even depth signings need to be made wisely. You never want to outright dismiss ideas, but this is one -and it’s not Schneidman’s idea, it’s obviously something he’s hearing- that the Packers need to avoid, no matter the context.

Report: Three teams have shown interest in acquiring Bears QB Justin Fields
Though nothing has been officially announced, the Chicago Bears are expected to keep the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and trade quarterback Justin Fields. The 24-year-old signal-caller is expected to have a share of suitors, and according to USA Today, three teams have already “expressed some level of interest” in Fields: the Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Bears general manager Ryan Poles has played the situation close to the vest thus far. He suggested that Fields’ input in where he lands will be considered, insinuating that he doesn’t want to ship the Ohio State alum off to the highest bidder. “It just depends on what opportunities pop up,” Poles said via ESPN. “…If we go down that road, I want to do right by Justin as well. No one wants to live in gray — I know that’s uncomfortable. I wouldn’t want to be in that situation either. So, we will gather the information, we will move as quickly as possible, [but] we are not going to be in a rush — and see what presents itself and what’s best for the organization.” Per NBC Sports Chicago, the Falcons have done more than just express interest, going as far as to check in with the Bears about Fields’ availability. Atlanta, which has Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke under contract for 2024, is expected to upgrade its quarterback position this offseason. Neither signal caller did much in 2023 to prove they deserve the starting job in 2024. The Steelers seem committed to giving Kenny Pickett another shot to lockdown their QB1 job, but head coach Mike Tomlin also admitted in January that Pickett “will be challenged from a competition perspective.” Adding Fields would give Pittsburgh a quarterback competition between two former first-round picks with something to prove. Jimmy Garoppolo is out in Vegas, and though he performed admirably as a rookie, Aidan O’Connell probably isn’t a starting NFL QB. The Raiders would be a strong landing spot for Fields, who would have an excellent supporting cast that includes receivers Davante Adams, Jakobi Myers and Hunter Renfrow, tight end Michael Mayer and possibly running back Josh Jacobs.
