College Football Transfer Portal Opens: Oklahoma’s Arnold and Top Stars Seek New Destinations

The college football transfer portal officially opened on Monday, the day after the announcement of the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff field. The portal period is open until December 28, allowing players to explore potential transfers for the 2024 season. Among the notable athletes making moves early are Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold, Texas State running back Ismail Mahdi, and several prominent wide receivers including Reggie Virgil from Miami (Ohio) and Eric Singleton Jr. from Georgia Tech.

Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold Enters Portal

Jackson Arnold, Oklahoma’s sophomore quarterback, has entered the transfer portal after a rollercoaster season. Arnold, a former five-star recruit, passed for 1,984 yards, threw 16 touchdowns, and rushed for 560 yards this season. Though he took over as the starting quarterback before the previous year’s bowl game, he faced challenges in 2024, particularly with a banged-up offensive line and a depleted receiving corps. After struggling early in the season, Arnold was temporarily replaced by Michael Hawkins Jr., but regained his role after Hawkins faltered. Arnold showed promise in a standout victory against Alabama, where he rushed for 131 yards and threw for 91 yards in a commanding win. Despite the flashes of brilliance, Arnold has opted to look for a fresh start through the transfer portal.

Ismail Mahdi’s Impressive Season at Texas State

Running back Ismail Mahdi has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal as well. Mahdi ran for 991 yards and scored four touchdowns in 2024, while also contributing 24 receptions for 195 yards and two scores. Known for his all-purpose yardage, Mahdi was a standout last season, leading the nation with 2,169 total yards. He gained 1,331 yards rushing, scored 10 touchdowns, and excelled as a return specialist with 563 yards. Mahdi’s decision comes after two stellar seasons, positioning him as one of the most coveted backs in the portal.

Reggie Virgil’s Breakout Year at Miami (Ohio)

Miami (Ohio) wide receiver Reggie Virgil is another player making waves. Virgil, who stood at 6-foot-4, had a breakout season in 2024, catching 41 passes for 816 yards and nine touchdowns. Despite a quiet start to his college career, the junior wideout showcased his potential as one of the top receiving threats in the MAC. He expressed gratitude for his time at Miami, noting the decision to transfer was difficult but necessary for his future prospects.

Georgia Tech’s Eric Singleton Jr. and Ohio State’s Devin Brown Join the Portal

Wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. from Georgia Tech is also entering the transfer portal after two productive seasons with the Yellow Jackets, totaling 104 catches, 1,468 yards, and nine touchdowns. The sophomore has yet to use a redshirt year, adding to his appeal. Meanwhile, Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown, who has spent three years as a backup, also announced his intention to transfer. Brown, who has thrown for 325 yards and three touchdowns in limited play, is seeking more opportunities after falling behind in the Buckeyes’ crowded quarterback room.

As the transfer portal period continues, many other players are expected to enter, reshaping teams and rosters across college football as they aim for new opportunities in 2024.
