Breaking News: LeBron James fumed Amid Laker's Choice of Darvin Ham's Replacement
The Los Angeles Lakers surprised many on Friday by axing head coach Darvin Ham after just two seasons in charge.
This move comes as the Lakers seek to find the ideal candidate to guide the team, especially with the potential conclusion of LeBron James’ remarkable career looming, and to reposition themselves as contenders for the championship.
Ham, who still had two years left on his contract, had a somewhat mixed performance during his time as coach. He secured a regular season record of 90-74 (.549) and a postseason record of 9-12 (.429), excluding his two play-in tournament victories.
Despite this, he did steer the Lakers to a tournament victory in Las Vegas last December
The Lakers’ choice to part with Ham comes shortly after their loss to the Denver Nuggets for the second time in a row, this time in a five-game series during the first round.
Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ VP of basketball operations and GM, expressed thanks for Ham’s contributions and noted the team’s achievements under his guidance, notably their impressive journey to the Western Conference finals last season.
Pelinka said, “We appreciate Darvin Ham’s efforts with the Lakers and acknowledge the successes of the past two seasons, including last year’s remarkable run to the Western Conference finals.” He added, “Though a tough decision, it’s the best step forward after a thorough review of the season
Ham’s termination follows a playoff downfall. Even with LeBron James and Anthony Davis both appearing in more games together than ever since they teamed up in 2018, the Lakers only clinched the 7th seed in a tough Western Conference.
This led to a difficult series against the 2nd-seeded Nuggets, resulting in a disappointing outcome for the Lakers
Ham’s firing comes after a postseason disappointment. Despite LeBron James and Anthony Davis playing more games together than ever since joining forces in 2018, the Lakers only managed to secure the 7th seed in a competitive Western Conference.
This set the stage for a challenging series against the 2nd-seeded Nuggets, culminating in a letdown for the Lakers.
