Breaking News: Dallas Mavericks Has Officially Announced Re-Signing of a Talented Forward

Veteran forward Markieff Morris has agreed to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks, continuing his 14th NBA season as a crucial locker room leader for the team. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Mavericks made it a priority to retain the 35-year-old, especially following their successful 2023-24 campaign, where they were crowned Western Conference champions. Morris’ experience and leadership are seen as valuable assets as the Mavericks aim to contend once again in the highly competitive Western Conference.

Morris joined the Mavericks during the 2022-23 season as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets to Dallas. Though he had limited minutes on the court during the 2023-24 season—appearing in only 26 games—his presence was most impactful off the court. He averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game, numbers that don’t fully capture the importance of his veteran leadership in a young and ambitious roster.

A seasoned NBA player, Morris has carved out a reputation as a physical forward who can stretch the floor with his three-point shooting and provide toughness in the paint. His career began in 2011 when he was selected 13th overall in the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, following a standout college career at the University of Kansas. Over the years, Morris has played for numerous teams, including the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Miami Heat.

Former Lakers champion lands new NBA contract
Morris has posted career averages of 10.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game over 776 regular-season appearances, while shooting 44.5% from the field and 34.3% from three-point range. His versatility on offense, combined with his ability to defend multiple positions, has made him a valuable rotational piece for various playoff contenders throughout his career.

Perhaps the pinnacle of Morris’ career came during his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played a key role in the team’s 2020 NBA championship run in the NBA Bubble. As a trusted contributor off the bench, Morris helped the Lakers secure their 17th title in franchise history.

Returning to the Mavericks for another season, Morris is expected to be a mentor to the team’s younger players and provide depth in the frontcourt. While his days as a high-volume scorer are behind him, his wealth of experience and championship pedigree will be integral to the Mavericks’ pursuit of another deep playoff run.

With Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving leading the charge, Dallas will be aiming to build on last season’s success, and the return of a reliable veteran like Morris could help provide the intangibles needed for another championship push.
