BREAKING: 3-star Defensive Lineman Decommit From Tennessee Flipping his Commitment to Auburn Tigers
Auburn football wasted no time on National Signing Day, making a splash by flipping three-star defensive lineman Darrion Smith from Tennessee. The move not only strengthens Auburn’s 2025 class but also signals the beginning of a potential recruiting pipeline to one of the top football programs in Maryland, St. Frances Academy in Baltimore.
Smith, a standout from the nationally recognized St. Frances Academy, had been committed to Tennessee since late July but decided to switch allegiances after a recent visit to Auburn. The visit took place during the Tigers’ thrilling victory over Texas A&M, a win that appeared to leave a lasting impression on Smith. During his time on campus, Smith was joined by several of his teammates, including Auburn commits Blake Woodby, Bryce Deas, and Wayne Henry, as well as 2026 safety Jireh Edwards.
The flip from Tennessee to Auburn is part of a broader strategy for the Tigers as they aim to establish a stronger foothold in Maryland, particularly with St. Frances Academy, one of the most prestigious high school football programs in the country. Smith’s commitment represents the first major victory in this recruiting effort, which could pay dividends in future seasons.
While Smith is currently ranked as the No. 552 overall player and the No. 56 defensive lineman in the class of 2025, his recruitment received attention from numerous high-profile programs across the SEC, underscoring his talent. Known for his remarkable athleticism, Smith earned praise for his performance in a high-stakes matchup earlier this season against IMG Academy. His most memorable moment came with a long fumble return for a touchdown, showcasing his speed and awareness. His teammate, Blake Woodby, even referred to him as “the most athletic defensive lineman” in St. Frances history.
Though Smith may not make an immediate impact on the field for Auburn, his potential is undeniable. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 260 pounds, his frame is expected to develop significantly in Auburn’s renowned strength and conditioning program. The coaching staff is excited about his high ceiling, as they look to develop him into a future cornerstone of their defensive line.
