BOOM: NHL Insider Unveils Shocking Truth About Edmonton Oilers’ Trade Deadline Plans

As the NHL trade deadline approaches, the Edmonton Oilers are reportedly on the hunt for defensive reinforcements. However, NHL insider David Pagnotta has cast a harsh light on their trade prospects, warning that the Oilers may struggle to make impactful moves due to a lack of valuable assets.

Pagnotta suggests that the Oilers’ best bet is Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard, a physical, one-dimensional player who could come at a relatively low cost. Savard, who is on a $3.5 million contract for the remainder of the season, might fit into Edmonton’s cap structure, but Pagnotta doesn’t believe Edmonton will have the assets to land anyone of greater significance.

“Edmonton’s gonna go out and get a defenceman. I put out at the beginning of the week that David Savard is gonna be a target. But with limited draft pick assets, no first-round pick, and a shallow prospect pool, who do you think you’re getting?” Pagnotta remarked.

Despite this bleak assessment, there are other signs suggesting the Oilers may have more options than Pagnotta believes. While it’s true the Oilers have already traded their first-round pick in 2024, they still possess their first-round picks for the following two years. Additionally, Edmonton has a solid group of young prospects, including highly touted Matthew Savoie, who could potentially be part of a trade package.

Recent reports also indicate that the Oilers have set their sights on a pair of higher-profile defenders: Marcus Pettersson of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ivan Provorov of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Both players could be attainable within the Oilers’ financial constraints.

Pettersson, known for his steady defensive play, is reportedly available for a second-round draft pick and a young player who is ready for NHL action. The Oilers, with a deep prospect pool and some flexibility, could meet that price, possibly adding additional assets for salary retention.

Provorov, on the other hand, is a more expensive option, but the Oilers have the means to pursue him. The asking price is a first-round draft pick, which Edmonton can afford in upcoming drafts, along with a pick for salary retention. Provorov, with a cap hit of $4.725 million, would be a valuable addition to Edmonton’s defense.

However, cap space remains a concern. According to PuckPedia, the Oilers are projected to have just $1.2 million in cap space at the deadline. This could make it difficult to fit in a high-priced player without additional roster moves. General Manager Ken Holland will need to work his magic to create the necessary space and make a significant move.

While Pagnotta’s pessimistic view of the Oilers’ trade deadline prospects is understandable, it’s clear the team still has avenues to strengthen its roster. With a combination of smart trades and cap management, the Oilers could prove that they have the assets to make a meaningful upgrade on defense. Only time will tell if they can turn the tide and land the reinforcements they desperately need.
