5-star Jireh Edwards sets commitment date with Oregon Football among top schools

Oregon Ducks: 5 takeaways from the season's first half

Few teams have recruited the defensive secondary as well as the Oregon Ducks over the past few years, and Dan Lanning is looking to continue that trend in the 2026 class.

The Ducks are in on a number of highly-rated defensive backs, one of whom is 5-star safety Jireh Edwards, the No. 24 player and No. 3 safety in the nation, per 247Sports. Standing at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, Edwards projects to be a high-ceiling player who fits the mold of what Oregon is building with length and size in the secondary.

Edwards is considering the Ducks along with other schools like the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies, Florida Gators, and Auburn Tigers. On Wednesday, he announced that he will officially make his commitment on July 5.

While it will be an uphill battle for the Ducks to land this elite prospect, they do have the benefit of rostering one of Edwards’ former teammates from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. Current Oregon redshirt freshman Ify Obidegwu played alongside Edwards two years ago, so there is a connection there and a line of communication for Edwards to get the inside info on how the Ducks run their program.

Obidegwu is in the mix to earn a starting CB spot this year, so it could be a relationship that works in Oregon’s favor in the long run.
